Virtual Breakout is a brick-breaker built around the one thing the Virtual Boy could do and nothing else of its era could: depth. The playfield has two planes, the shoulder triggers move you between them, and a brick at the back can only be broken by a ball at the back.
Something has woken up inside the network. It does not destroy -- it absorbs. Every sector it reaches stops answering, then stops existing. You fly the last ship able to enter those sectors and come back out.
Virtual Breakout takes the oldest arcade shape there is and gives it the axis the Virtual Boy was built for. The screen is not a surface but a volume with two levels of depth. The left and right triggers move your ship between them; the sphere adopts your plane every time it touches you. Aiming is no longer left and right -- it is left, right, and how far away.
Twelve sectors across four worlds each teach exactly one idea before combining it with the last: structures that resist, charges that chain, wells that drop the ball through the floor onto the opposite plane, and finally all of it at once. Four guardians close the worlds -- the Hunter, the Colossus, the Queen and the Core. Each has a single animation and a single defence, and every defence is undone by the opposite plane. A player who never switches planes will lose, however good their hands are.
Powers are never picked from a menu: they fall as capsules and are caught with the ship. Every run draws its own sky from sixteen variants per world, and nine chip tracks can be played back from an in-game jukebox. The game runs on real hardware from a flash cartridge, and in any Virtual Boy emulator.
Six shots that carry the game. The full set -- 64 images at 768×448 -- is in the press kit archive above.
